Minimal vertex covers of random trees

چکیده
We study minimal vertex covers of trees. Contrarily to the number Nvc(A) of minimal vertex covers of the tree A, log Nvc(A) is a self-averaging quantity. We show that, for large sizes n, limn→+∞ < log Nvc(A) >n /n = 0.1033252 ± 10−7. The basic idea is, given a tree, to concentrate on its degenerate vertices, that is those vertices which belong to some minimal vertex cover but not to all of them. Deletion of the other vertices induces a forest of totally degenerate trees. We show that the problem reduces to the computation of the size distribution of this forest, which we perform analytically, and of the average < log Nvc > over totally degenerate trees of given size, which we perform numerically.

Degrees in $k$-minimal label random recursive trees
This article describes the limiting distribution of the degrees of nodes has been derived for a kind of random tree named k-minimal label random recursive tree, as the size of the tree goes to infinity. The outdegree of the tree is equal to the number of customers in a pyramid marketing agency immediatly alluring
متن کاملThe eccentric connectivity index of bucket recursive trees
If $G$ is a connected graph with vertex set $V$, then the eccentric connectivity index of $G$, $xi^c(G)$, is defined as $sum_{vin V(G)}deg(v)ecc(v)$ where $deg(v)$ is the degree of a vertex $v$ and $ecc(v)$ is its eccentricity. In this paper we show some convergence in probability and an asymptotic normality based on this index in random bucket recursive trees.
متن کاملMessage passing for vertex covers
Constructing a minimal vertex cover of a graph can be seen as a prototype for a combinatorial optimization problem under hard constraints. In this paper, we develop and analyze message-passing techniques, namely, warning and survey propagation, which serve as efficient heuristic algorithms for solving these computational hard problems. We show also, how previously obtained results on the typica...
متن کاملCombinatorial properties of triplet covers for binary trees
It is a classical result that an unrooted tree T having positive real-valued edge lengths and no vertices of degree two can be reconstructed from the induced distance between each pair of leaves. Moreover, if each non-leaf vertex of T has degree 3 then the number of distance values required is linear in the number of leaves. A canonical candidate for such a set of pairs of leaves in T is the fo...
متن کاملCovering Graphs Using Trees and Stars
A tree cover of a graph G is defined as a collection of trees such that their union includes all the vertices of G. The cost of a tree cover is the weight of the maximum weight tree in the tree cover. Given a positive integer k, the k-tree cover problem is to compute a minimum cost tree cover which has no more than k trees. Star covers are defined analogously. Additionally, we may also be provi...
